Travel Stories 2007

It's been yet another busy year for travel. Countless new hotels and resorts opened around the world, new domestic and international airlines debuted, and technical innovations further transformed an already shifting industry.
I have compiled some interesting stories from travel site, here you go:

1. To kick off 2007, Cambodia took a big step at grabbing some of its neighbors' tourism bucks: Unused for 40 years, a Soviet-built airport in the port town of Sihanoukville was renovated and re-opened, ready for international service.
2. Also in January, Southwest Airlines nearly killed a hepatitis-C patient awaiting a liver transplant because he refused to purchase an extra ticket (due to his weight). Southwest later apologized and issued a refund.
3. A team of explorers from Great Britain and Canada reached the geographic center of Antarctica -- on foot, unassisted.
4. In February, JetBlue famously stranded passengers on the runway, instantly catapulting the low-cost airline into the national news cycle as scapegoat for all long-delay airlines. In a video released on YouTube, CEO David G Neeleman described himself as "humiliated and mortified" by the snafu that left some customers stuck in their seats for 11 hours. Cancelled flights will eventually exceed 1000 for the month, costing JetBlue as much as $30 million in refunds, vouchers and overtime.
5. In March, Las Vegas strip symbol and erstwhile mafia hangout Stardust Resort & Casino was razed to make room for a new casino.
6. Thai Airways switched nearly all of its flights to Don Muang, the old airport; a flight from Jakarta crashed upon landing, killing 32 of its passengers. Other crashes would make the news throughout the year: In May, 114 perished when a Kenya Airways plane fell in Cameroon; 87 souls were lost when their plane crashed while attempting to land in bad weather in Phuket, Thailand; in November, a Turkish passenger jet crashed in the mountains, killing all 57 aboard.
7. The Glasgow airport was closed on June 30 due to an incident involving car bombs.
8. On 7-7-7 (that's July 7, 2007), the new Seven Wonders of the World were announced. The Great Pyramid at Giza was the only Ancient Wonder to make the cut.
9. On 7-8-7, Boeing introduced its new Dreamliner 787, said to be the most environmentally friendly aircraft in the world. It's made entirely of carbon Fiber and uses 20 percent less fuel than other jet in its class.
10. In October, the gargantuan Airbus 380 finally took its first commercial flight, from Singapore to Sydney on behalf of Singapore Airlines. Also, a transit strike crippled Paris.

Television 2007: The best moments

Reality shows
Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, Indian Idol and Star Voice of India gained even more popularity than previous years. In fact, they were such a hit that big Bollywood releases used the platform to promote the films.
Sa Re Ga Ma Pa was popular because it had participants from different parts of the country, as well as abroad, and showcased real talent. The participants were trained by their respective mentors -- Himesh Reshammiya, Ismail Darbar, Vishal-Shekhar and Bappi Lahiri.
The show was also spiced up with regular fights among the mentors.
The third season of Indian Idol seemed to unite the country, and bring the North-East into focus. Winner Prashant Tamang hailed from Darjeeling while Amit Paul hailed from Shillong.
Star Voice of India showcased quality singers and was judged by Jatin- Latin, Aadesh Shrivastav, Alka Yagnik and Abhijeet.

Dance Shows
Celebrity dance shows like Nach Baliye 3 and Jhalak Dikhla Jaa 2 were enjoyable, and both shows ended controversially.
Rakhi Sawant and boyfriend Abhishek Awasthi lost out to Aamir Ali and Sanjeeda Sheikh, and made quite a fuss about it.
In Jhalak, Prachi Desai and her choreographer partner Deepak won the title, even though runner-ups Sandhya Mridul and Javed received a standing ovation for their performance.

Comedy Circus
Audiences, seemingly tired of daily soaps, lapped up the reality comic shows as well.
Comedy Circus paired up telly actors and professional stand-up comedians, and they were expected to entertain people. The best part of the show was that the pairs did not have a script at all, and yet, provided a lot of laughs.

Left Right Left
Left Right Left was not like the regular saas-bahu soaps, and was quite a refreshing watch.
The serial was a mix of intrigue, romance and humour.

Kasamh Se
Ekta Kapoor's Kasamh Se tells the story about the journey of sisters from a small town to Mumbai, and how their relationships undergo changes with situations and time.

Dharti Ka Veer Yodha -- Prithvi Raj Chauhan
Prithviraj Chauhan is the most lavish teleserial ever made. It shows Prithviraj's journey from a young prince to a responsible king. The serial also gives viewers a fascinating look into the lifestyle of kings, their culture and cuisines.

Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi...
One of the longest running serials on Star Plus is Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu. Even after seven years, Kyunki tops the charts.

Choona Hai Aasmaan
This serial revolves around a dedicated mission commander, Arya Veer Pratap, and his team of six committed professionals -- brave men and women who are devoted to wiping out terrorism from India.

Virrudh
The serial consists of politics, mystery, family drama, and power games. It is different from most other boring family dramas.

Kahaani Ghar Ghar Kii
Kahaani is a drama series produced by Ekta Kapoor's Balaji Telefims. The story revolves around the Agarwal family, with Om (Kiran Karmarkar) and Parvati (Sakshi Tanwar) playing the protagonists.

Banoo Main Teri Dulhan
Banoo is the story of a submissive, illiterate Vidya who finds herself helpless when she enters the rich Thakur household. To add to it, she encounters hostility from her sisters-in-law.

Bollywood 2007: Biggest Flops

Saawariya
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's film was one of the most awaited films of the year. It was supposed to be the big launch of star kids, Sonam Kapoor and Ranbir Kapoor. Besides, the Hollywood studio, Sony Pictures, was making its debut in Bollywood.

Eklavya
Vidhu Vinod Chopra's film earned great reviews, and was even sent as India's official entry to the Oscars. But the film was a commercial disaster. Even Amitabh Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan's star power could not save Eklavya.

Salaam-E-Ishq
This was the first big flop of the year.
Salaam-E-Ishq starred the who's who of Bollywood -- from Salman Khan, Govinda, Priyanka Chopra, John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Juhi Chawla to Vidya Balan -- and was expected to do well.

Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag
Ram Gopal Varma took a huge gamble by remaking one of Hindi cinema's best films, Sholay. He even attched his name to the venture. Unfortunately, it did not pay.

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom
Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was a surprise flop due to many reasons. Firstly, it was produced by Yash Raj Filmd, which had a reputation for its Midas touch until last year.
Secondly, its music -- by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy -- was a huge hit, and everyone expected the film to be as good. And lastly, it was directed by Shaad Ali, who gave us hits like Bunty Aur Babli and Saathiya before Jhoom.

Lagaa Chunari Mein Daag
If 2005 was one of the best years for Rani Mukerji, 2007 was probably one of her worst.
Laaga looked especially bad for her because she had the central role; there was no male lead, except for a special appearance from Abhishek Bachchan.

Aaja Nachle
Madhuri Dixit's comeback was said to be one of the big events of the year.
But sadly, Aaja Nachle had a poor box office opening, and only made news for the wrong reasons.

Fool N Final
Shahid Kapur may have hoped that his film, Fool N Final was rake in the moolah. But instead, it bombed. Though the songs were catchy, and the film starred Sunny Deol as well, director Ahmed Khan could not make his film work.

Ta Ra Rum Pum
Many filmmakers spaced their films around TRRP, Yash Raj's first release of the year.
No one wanted their film to release on the same day, as everyone expected it to be a hit. But the film bombed.

Nishabd
The hit Sarkar combination of Amitabh Bachchan and Ram Gopal Varma came together in Nishabd. Nishabd, however, sank without a trace.

Wish you a Merry Christmas

Christmas is an annual holiday that celebrates the birth of Jesus. It refers both to the day celebrating the birth, as well as to the season which that day inaugurates, which concludes with the Feast of the Epiphany. The date of the celebration is traditional, and is not considered to be his actual date of birth. Christmas festivities often combine the commemoration of Jesus' birth with various cultural customs, many of which have been influenced by earlier winter festivals. Although a Christian holiday, it is also observed as a cultural holiday by many non-Christians.
While in the Greek Orthodox world it is in early January, in most other places around the world, Christmas Day is celebrated on December 25. Christmas Eve is the preceding day, December 24.
In the United Kingdom and many countries of the Commonwealth, Boxing Day is the following day, December 26. In Catholic countries, Saint Stephen's Day or the Feast of St. Stephen is December 26. The Armenian Apostolic Church observes Christmas on January 6. Eastern Orthodox Churches that still use the Julian Calendar celebrate Christmas on the Julian version of 25 December, which is January 7 on the more widely used Gregorian calendar, because the two calendars are now 13 days apart.
The word Christmas originated as a contraction of "Christ's mass". It is derived from the Middle English Christemasse and Old English Cristes mæsse, a phrase first recorded in 1038, compounded from Old English derivatives of the Greek christos and the Latin missa.[1] In early Greek versions of the New Testament, the letter Χ (chi), is the first letter of Christ. Since the mid-16th century Χ, or the similar Roman letter X, was used as an abbreviation for Christ.[2] Hence, Xmas is often used as an abbreviation for Christmas.
After the conversion of Anglo-Saxon Britain in the very early 7th century, Christmas was referred to as geol,[1] the name of the pre-Christian solstice festival from which the current English word 'Yule' is derived.[3]
The prominence of Christmas Day increased gradually after Charlemagne was crowned on Christmas Day in 800. Around the 12th century, the remnants of the former Saturnalian traditions of the Romans were transferred to the Twelve Days of Christmas (25 December5 January). Christmas during the Middle Ages was a public festival, incorporating ivy, holly, and other evergreens, as well as gift-giving.
Modern traditions have come to include the display of Nativity scenes, Holly and Christmas trees, the exchange of gifts and cards, and the arrival of Father Christmas or Santa Claus on Christmas Eve or Christmas morning. Popular Christmas themes include the promotion of goodwill and peace.

Marathons save lives, says study

Economic Times, December 22, 2007

PARIS: The conventional wisdom that marathons are a dangerous cause of fatal heart attacks is a myth, says a study, which found that the staging of these races in fact reduces deaths - from road accidents. The media like to headline the sudden deaths that occur among marathon runners, but the truth is that by blocking off roads to stage events, organisers save lives from traffic mishaps, it says. Researchers led by Donald Redelmeier of the University of Toronto in Canada randomly selected 26 established marathons involving three million participants over a 30-year period. Each of the marathons had at least 1,000 runners and took place on US roads. The investigators recorded the tally of fatal heart attacks that occurred in the marathons, as well as the number of fatal accidents that happened on the same roads during the same hours, one week before and one week after each marathon. They also tallied deaths that occurred in state counties outside the marathon route, to see if these had been affected by a spillover in traffic caused by closed-off roads.

9. Taare Zameen Par: Aamir Khan, the filmmaker, has arrived. Get ready for an inspiring cinema that is a must-see for every parent.

Cast: Aamir Khan, Tisca Chopra, Darsheel Safary, M. K. Raina, Tanay Cheda, Sachet Engineer, Vipin Sharma

8. Saawariya

From a bird’s eye view, the dream world of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya looks like a vague cubist painting, with houses in hues of blue and green. And it is a world where the sun doesn’t shine. Not at least in the course of the story.Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s short story ‘White Nights’, ‘Saawariya’ is like a dark and surreal fable that enchants you with its visual beauty, but doesn’t touch you where it matters the most – heart. And the reason for this is that Sanjay Leela Bhansali gives more importance to creating the right ambience rather than capturing the essence of the story. To put it briefly, the film’s beautiful form obliterates the inherent love and pathos in the story. And ‘Saawariya’ ends up as a unique study in the art of cinematography, but an average film that falls short of providing what it promised.

7. Aaja Nachle - Dancer's Lover
Cast: Akshaye Khanna, Konkona Sen Sharma, Kunal Kapoor, Madhuri Dixit, Ranvir ShoreyDirector: Anil Mehta

For an actress who strongly believes that dancing awakens spirituality in one's self, no other movie can be a more suitable comeback to Bollywood than Yash Raj Films' song and dance musical, Aaja Naachle. Madhuri's grand comeback .After a five year break since her last release - Devdas (2002) - Madhuri Dixit once again steps into her dancing shoes ready to mesmerise Bollywood fans with her dancing skills.Aaja Nachle sees Madhuri playing the role of a theatre actress. It focuses on a woman's journey back to her roots, rekindling lost relationships and bringing back to life the theatre where she learnt the lessons of life and love. She now faces her toughest challenge as she fights against all odds to bring back to life her beloved theatre.

6. Johny Gaddar
Seshadri (Dharmendra), Prakash (Vinay Patak), Shardul (Zakir Hussain), Shiva (Daya Shetty) and Vikram (Neil Mukesh) are five business associates, who plan a conspiracy. All have one common interest and that is making fast money. The eldest of the group is Seshadri and he gets an offer to make a fortune in four days and the rest of the gang agree to pitch in their share as this would put them in the big league. The youngest of the group Vikram decides to double-cross and elope with his love Mini. What ensues is an accident that they all try to figure out.
Overall, Johnny Gaddar is half planned suspense thriller but manges to entertain.
SO all in all an entertaining affair and a great movie to watch.
5. Lions of Punjab

Writer-director Manish Acharya's 90-minute film leaves you with enough characters to populate two big-budget Karan Johar spectacles. Broadly assertive Indians swarm the posh hotel that hosts the music contestants. Yes, there's plenty of anger underlining the film's utterly blithe and amusing subtext. On the surface, the eccentric and isolated NRI community seem to represent the most apparent fall-out of cultural displacement.Within half-an-hour you warm up to these naively ambitious characters as people whom you've probably bumped into during your last visit to the US at the neighbourhood curry canteen.

4. No Smoking

I’ve heard of leave your-brain-behind movies but for NO SMOKING, you should leave your self behind! Seriously this is absurd cinema. Bizzare, strange, illogical, ridiculous, silly.....

3. Chak De India

Jo nahin ho sakta hai, wahi to karna hai...

Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) knows what it's like to come back from the dead. The ex Indian Captain has now come back in the avatar of the Coach of the Indian Women's National Hockey team. A team that exists more on paper and less in reality.

Mujhe sirf ek mulk ka naam sunaai deta hai –India

The girls have never known the thrilling energy of being Team India.

Chak De India is the story of a coach's fight of making his team, Team India by overcoming their diverse backgrounds, by learning to use everything that life hurls on them as a secret weapon. It's a story about honesty, sincerity and integrity. A story to remind the nation of its National sport.

2. RGV ki AAG - Its Burning Hot !!!

A remake of Sholay ? Sort of

A Xerox Copy of Sholay ? Not at all

An Adaptation with another visionaries perspective ? - Yes that is what it is.

AAG - one of the most awaited movies of this year. I was excited about it since the day I came to know that RGV was making it.

SO all in all an entertaining affair and a great movie to watch. - Joke of the century
1. Gandhi my father
Eros International announced its next global release, Gandhi My Father, the most captivating and revolutionary film ever to emerge from India, telling the untold story of Gandhi’s tragic relationship with his eldest son.
A great movie. Fantastic movie. Gandhi My Father has already begun attracting international attention, with former South African President and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Nelson Mandela, requesting a private screening of the film . Hollywood actors Will Smith and Goldie Hawn, who are known Gandhi supporters, have already seen the film’s showreel. Smith was quoted as saying he was “very impressed with the canvas of the film and the emotional intensity of the actors”.
Gandhi My Father is a powerful study of the nature and sufferings of the patriarchal relationship between one of the world’s most loved figures – ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi - and his misfortunate eldest son Harilal. The film delves into a territory that has never before been visited by film, and will spark debate by bringing to light an unknown facet of the personal history of a man who transformed the soul of a nation, but who could not save the soul of his own son.Based on his thought-provoking play, Mahatma v/s Gandhi, veteran thespian of Indian theatre and cinema Feroz Khan has combined his unparalleled talents as a writer and director with the production skills of fellow industry stalwart Anil Kapoor, to create the most affecting film of modern times.

BSNL Bangalore International Marathon 2007

Karnataka Athletic Association hosted the 2007 Bangalore International Marathon on 16 Dec 2007. Title sponsor was BSNL.
The Kenyans were in a class of their own. A sterling performance saw them sweeping the top three spots in the full marathon event.
I also participated in the Half Marathon event and successfully completed within 2 hours and 9 minutes. This event had participation over 900, more than 50% couldn't complete. I finished 181st.
It was Kenyans all the way in Full Marathon event.
Ngira Nyaga took two hours, 22 minutes and 32 seconds to complete the 42.195-km distance, while compatriots Makau Nzioka (2::25:26) and Sua Mutisya (Kenya, 2::31:25) finished second and third respectively. Fantaw Hussen (Ethiopia, 2::32:04) finished fourth, while India’s Munna Mahli (2::35:39) finished fifth and Etiopia’s Kasahun Gebree Gziabher (2::47:0) sixth and last within the prize money bracket.
The Indians fared better in the half marathon with Surender Singh taking the top spot in the men’s section in a time of 1::04:5. Habteselassie Lemma Gemechu (Ethiopia, 1::04:6) and Santosh Kumar (India, 1::05:2) finished second and third respectively. In the women’s half marathon, Kenya’s Agnes (1::11:3) and Pauline (1::12:1) took the first two spots, while Indians Kavitha Raut (1::14:1) and Preethi L Rao (1::18:5) finished third and fourth respectively.

In the full marathon, one has to give it to the Kenyans. Their pace was unbelievable from the word go.
Results:Full marathon (men only): Ngira Nyaga (Kenya, 2::22:32 hours) 1; Makau Nzioka (Kenya, 2::25:26) 2; Sua Mutisya (Kenya, 2::31:25) 3; Fantaw Hussen (Ethiopia, 2::32:04) 4; Munna Mahli (India, 2::35:39) 5; Kasahun Gebree Gziabher (Ethiopia, 2::47:0) 6.Half marathon: Men: Surender Singh (India, 1::04:5) 1; Habteselassie Lemma Gemechu (Ethiopia, 1::04:6) 2; Santosh Kumar (India, 1::05:2) 3; Berhanu Meleyo Kassa (Ethiopia, 1::05:4) 4; Soji Mathew (India, 1::05:5) 5; Zenebe Kasaw Kebret (Ethiopia, 1::06:5) 6.Women: Agnes (Kenya, 1::11:3) 1; Pauline (Kenya, 1::12:1) 2; Kavitha Raut (India, 1::14:1) 3; Preethi L Rao (India, 1::18:5) 4; Vaishali Chatare (India, 1::22:5) 5; K Maheshwari (India, 1::30:5) 6.

Cricket India 2007 - India play on despite the turmoil

The chaotic world of Indian cricket hit a new low in 2007 with reluctant captains, invisible coaches, warring officials and rebel games hogging the spotlight.
The players attempted to stay focussed amid the discord and bedlam, but were unwilling victims in the storm that engulfed the cricket world's most powerful nation that drives the sport's economics.
Team India did well to recover from the humiliating blow of a first round knock-out from the World Cup in March-April where they were stunned by unfancied Bangladesh and eventual finalists Sri Lanka.
India won three consecutive Test series against Bangladesh, England and Pakistan, finished with a 20-15 winning one-day record and claimed the inaugural Twenty20 World title in South Africa.

India won the Twenty20 World Cup after a thrilling final in which arch-rivals Pakistan fell five runs short

Sadly, the year will be remembered more for non-cricketing reasons that grabbed the headlines in the aggressive and competitive Indian media.
Chappell, the former Australian captain and batting great, quit as coach after the World Cup debacle in April, but it took eight months for India's bungling chiefs to find a replacement.
Graham Ford turned down the job, leading contender Dav Whatmore was not even considered and India were forced to make-do with temporary appointees like Chandu Borde and Lalchand Rajput before ex-South African opener Gary Kirsten was appointed.

It's business as usual in Indian cricket. There could be more of the same next year.
